#2 in series on fasting and intermittent fasting.

Why do I want to teach you about fasting? I am going to get more personal in this post which I sometimes avoid.
Several years ago the rheumatoid arthritis (RA) was progressively getting worse and worse so I decided to work with Dr. Joel Fuhrman who had been diagnosed with it when he was a professional ice skater. Dr. Fuhrman was in medical school with Dr. Oz and they are friends. I had read one of his books and learned that he recommended fasting to help reduce the symptoms of RA.

Working in my clinic was so important to me that I wanted desperateIy to feel better and get well. I was told I could apply for disability but that was not the route I wanted to go!  I wanted to get better!!  I love working! So I decided to try fasting. The fasting was supposed to help to calm the rheumatoid arthritis down and possibly heal the disease! Dr. Fuhrman was a young man when he fasted and he did it for close to 30 days! I did not have 30 days to be away from my clinic as I was the only practitioner at the time. But I was willing to go as long as I had time for and at that time I took off two weeks from work.

At that time the symptoms were so bad that I could not pick up a towel to dry my body after a bath. I could not lift my arms above my head to shampoo my hair. I feel part of the issue was the stress involved in being off for two weeks and worrying about my patients while I was home fasting. The pain got worse as I thought about being off! But I did it. I fasted for 5 days and in three days the pain was significantly better. So much so that I was able to do everything again and was moving around well. Tim was so shocked at the improvement that he said he would do anything to help me eat better to keep the symptoms down. I was very stubborn and did not want to take medicine.

From then on we worked hard at eating a low inflammatory diet. The symptoms have never been that bad again and I have fasted several times more over the years when pain and swelling flair up. I still have not gotten the disease to go away but I know I have a way to reduce the worst of this disease.

Another book from Dr. Fuhrman that I have at the clinic and can be checked out is “Super Immunity.”

The next post on fasting will address some of the benefits of fasting over our life time.
