Food is central to our health. Most people understand this. However, how and what we consume can be a difficult topic. What do we eat? How do we eat for our best health? Is everyone different? People eat in diverse ways worldwide. How do I know what is right for me? What did our ancestors eat? Was it better?
Most of us know eating well or eating for our best health isn’t always a simple matter. We can’t always head out to the farmer’s market, purchase all organic items, and whip up a delicious homemade creation that satisfies all our body’s individual nutritional needs every single day. Everyone faces challenges in achieving lifelong health and nutrition.
Here, we address and suggest solutions for many of the roadblocks to eating well that affect our health and our ability to pursue it despite our desire for positive change. Some barriers might include your family. Perhaps you struggle with picky eaters, food allergies or restricted diets. Maybe you lack time (it’s hard to eat well with all the responsibilities we often have), or money (what do you do when you can’t afford healthy food??) Perhaps it is a lack of information or confusion on how to prepare new foods properly, or personal tastes that challenges us. Did you know it can take 3-6 weeks to develop new tastes and change your preferences, such as from a processed or high-sugar diet?
We’ll also look into the individual motivations to eat well and the beliefs we hold around food. Some people have the idea that they can just look at something and gain weight. Others may have misconceptions about calories vs the way they work in our bodies, and the genetic components to diet and weight. We will look at how to move forward from these ideas, as well as examine the influences on our modern food system and how those influences have affected our health (i.e. advertisements and Big Food, Pharma, and Agriculture).
