Medicine is a very broad topic. Because we simply can’t cover everything, our approach will be to discuss our philosophy, add some important definitions, and then dive a little deeper in some areas.
The Art of Medicine
The Science of Medicine
What is our focus? Who are we? Why are we different?
We try to see medicine as a three-legged stool. This three-pronged base upon which all health rests includes the mind, the body and movement. Our goal is to educate people on how each of these areas affects and interacts with the other. We will also include education about how our bodies interact with the environment, the impact of air and water on our health, and the importance of getting both sun and sleep.
At Agroshare, we prioritize the concept of food as medicine and getting off pharmaceutical medication whenever possible. This is not always possible once our bodies have developed some problems, but we will work hard to make this possible for as many of our patients as we can. This page will focus on education and teaching general tools you can use to improve your health. We don’t have all the answers. We want to be a starting place to put you at the helm of your life and health.
We teach medicine in three separate, yet intertwined, areas which we call:
Regenerative Mind – Psychology and mental health
Regenerative Body – What goes in and on the body
Regenerative Movement – Fitness
We work hard to take a whole body approach.
We believe in developing relationships.
We ask lots of questions about:
Social life, family life, career, financial stability (in order to address your concerns about health care costs), fitness, diet, emotional/psyche, and occasionally education.
We want to stress that there is great diversity in our health needs and that there is no one correct solution or one-size fits all. We want to give you lots of helpful information, but we also want those who come here to know we see you as an individual. It is very important for us as health care providers to stress the personal and private nature of all health care decisions. We have similar bodies but all are not the same, so we have different health care needs.
Regenerating Our Minds
Our mind is our greatest asset!
We have learned over the last 40 years or more that the mind and body are intricately connected and issues with both can affect our health in significant ways. Many of the states across the country are truly lacking regarding both treating mental health issues and understanding the deep connection between mind and body.
At Agroshare, we want to dive deeply and provide resources to help people fully understand this topic. We want to touch on how the mind can help heal the body. We want people to understand how the mind can make the body sick.
Most areas of medicine, including mental health, are very broad. However, we hope to add new information each month so that more and more people can learn how important it is to keep the mind healthy, and how doing so can improve overall health and increase your lifespan. We also want to help people understand that eating well and moving more, along with spending more time outside, can significantly improve our health outcomes. We will include farming and gardening in the research we will add to this page. This category will continue to evolve as we strive to teach the important roles that food, farming and medicine play in the broader health of Alabamians, as well as people in the rest of the country.
We want Alabamians to prioritize mental health, and will include many ideas for caring for your mind and resources for getting support here. Many people have significant mental health issues that aren’t properly addressed. The cost of getting mental health services can be especially prohibitive. Our system is overtaxed and under-funded. Our goal is to add many resources here that are available at a very low cost or even no cost when possible. We also want to recommend practitioners who can help people in significant ways that include treating the whole person and not just the mind or just the body. We want to find and promote practitioners who know how important it is to cover all areas of our body, and how a focus on nutrition can improve both physical and mental health.
Regenerating Our Bodies
Most physicians and health practitioners are not taught nutrition in school. We hope to change that! Even if we can’t change it quickly, we want to offer you that information here on our page so you can improve your health significantly by understanding how what we put in our bodies directly affects our health. This is not a topic where money is usually spent on research, nor where money is to be easily made in the medical field.
Because we cover food at great length under the Food category on a separate page on Agroshare, here we will focus on medical research and how it fits into the food industry. We will attempt to show you how medicine and food are important topics to understand in relation to each other.
Many physicians still do not have the knowledge of how important what we put in our mouths is to our overall health. Most of us understand the relevance of food and medicine, but not intricately. Hopefully, we can make this journey fun and beneficial!
Regenerating Our Movements
Talking about exercise or physical education (PE) is not always popular! This topic can often remind us of school and how we had to play dodge ball, run on the school track until our sides hurt, be the last one picked to be on a kickball team, or lots of other unpleasant experiences we may have had as a kid. There are always those who were athletic in school but may now not be doing anything to keep their bodies fit. We often watch programs on TV and wish we could look like fitness models or be as fit as participants in the CrossFit Games! But we never imagine ourselves actually being able to do what it takes to look and be that strong. While it seems unattainable, we hope to make physical activity and health an achievable goal for anyone.
We don’t want Regenerative Movement to make people feel guilty or wish they could look a certain way. Instead, we want to show that it does not take as much time or energy as they imagine in order to increase the amount of movement one gets each day. We are the first to admit that being healthy and staying fit takes effort- you cannot increase your health if you are completely sedentary. But we want to show some inspiring stories of how people in very poor condition, in lots of pain and with advanced age, have been able to improve their physical fitness significantly without having to spend hours in the gym every day. We want to show how one may improve physical fitness even when they have been in chronic pain or suffered from poor health or physical condition for many years.
We also want to provide education, inspiration, and connect the dots between food, farming and medical wholeness. This includes being physically fit. We will do our research and find practitioners who understand that we can use a whole-body approach that includes the mind and motivation, what to eat and how to eat for the best physical condition, and is the most effective path to overall wellness. We hope to use the latest research to help anyone at any age improve their ability to move.
